Describe Task: Using a drill motor to fasten screws or to drill holes with drill bits and/or step bits into metals of various types, gauges, and thicknesses. Roto-Hammer drills to make holes in concrete for wedge anchors. Reciprocating saw used to make straight cuts into duct, pipe, misc. hardware, and materials of various metals, thicknesses, and gauges. Shears used to straight line cut sheet metal and duct of various gauges. Core drilling used to make holes of various sizes into the concrete, two man job if catching cores are necessary. Wetting down the concrete with a Hudson tank sprayer is required when core drilling, slurry is controlled with a shop vac. All equipment aforementioned is used by experienced competent skilled tradesmen.
Required PPE: General PPE for general construction.
Supplemental PPE: Earplugs (Earmuffs) if 85dB levels are reached and exceeded.
Required Permits: If work reaches noise/vibration levels that require a permit.
General Comments: If work changes beyond the scope of this JHA - STOP. Notify your supervisor. Re-evaluate for possible new hazards. Confirm this JHA already addresses all new hazards and that safe actions are adequate. If not, a new JHA is required.
WORK OPERATION POTENTIAL ACCIDENTS OR HAZARDS SAFE JOB ACTIONS NEEDED
Drilling a hole Torque a wrist, hand slam, finger pinch, grip slip General PPE with task specific gloves, use two hands one on the trigger one on the handle if made with one, if not hold the body. Use stable and standard form technique.
Using a drill for attaching a screw Grip slip, screw slip, hand slam Keep fingers gripped on the pistol grip. Maintain a perpendicular angle, keeping hands and fingers clear of potential collision with hand and drill.
Roto-Hammering Silica, high dB hand/wrist torque, drilling beyond the thickness of the concrete Use an engineered control for concrete dust such as a HEPA vac mounted to drill or small portable HEPA vac or a wet down method with a Hudson sprayer, earplugs/earmuffs, and use stable and standard form technique. Mark the bit so punching through the thickness of the concrete is mitigated.
Reciprocating saw Hand lacerations Using the guard as much as possible. Use both hands as much as possible. In the event where one or both of those can’t happen the following shall apply. Use a light application of the blade tip while plunge cutting. Make sure the blade is started in the groove if only using one hand while using the other to hold the material.
Shears Sharp edges from cut material Using heavy duty cut resistant gloves and being aware of the material drops.
Core drilling Sever utilities embedded in concrete, high level dBs, slurry, drop core Scan the concrete, earmuffs/earplugs, use a wet/dry shop vac, have a 2nd person below catching the core with a bucket. Subcontracting this work to a union company that specializes in concrete drilling and cutting.
This JHA is to be reviewed and signed by all personnel at the jobsite. It is to be kept at each work site for the duration of this project.
